How far is the Ourika Valley from Marrakech?
The valley starts about 30 km from Marrakech, and Setti Fatma at the end of the road is around 60 km away, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by car. You arrange your own transport to the starting point you agree with Khalid. No car or driver? Khalid can help you organise transport.
Is the Ourika Valley worth visiting?
Yes. It's the closest real taste of the High Atlas to Marrakech, and much cooler than the city in summer. The Setti Fatma waterfalls get crowded at weekends, so Khalid's hikes head into the quiet villages and hills the tour buses never reach.
Do I need a guide in the Ourika Valley?
Not for the first waterfall at Setti Fatma, which is marked. Beyond that, village trails are unmarked and steep. A local guide also opens doors: Khalid speaks Tashelhit and the families know him, so you visit places you'd never find alone.
Are the "guides" at the Setti Fatma waterfalls a scam?
Many self-appointed guides there ask 100–150 dirhams for the first waterfall, and some visitors feel pressured. If you go alone, agree the price first. With Khalid, everything is agreed before the day.
How much does a hike cost?
Shared hikes cost 200–300 MAD per person and private hikes 400–600 MAD for your whole group, depending on the length of the hike. Khalid matches solo travellers and couples into small shared groups. If there are two or more of you, going private costs the same or less.
How do I get to the start of the hike?
You arrange your own transport to the meeting point you agree with Khalid when you book (for the signature hike, the bridge near the Maison du Meunier Berbère). It's about an hour by car from Marrakech. No car or driver? Khalid can help you organise transport, just ask when you book.
How hard is the 5-hour hike?
Moderate: village paths and dirt trails with some rocky sections and a short scramble at the caves. Khalid's hikes are 5 to 15 km depending on the route, and the 5-hour hike is one of the longer ones. If you can walk 3–4 hours with breaks, you'll be fine. We go at your pace and stop often for photos.
When is the best time to visit?
Spring (March to May) brings blossom and green terraces; autumn (September to November) is perfect walking weather, and that's when Khalid guides most. In summer and winter, message him: summer hikes start early to beat the heat, and winter brings snow to the peaks and crisp, clear days.
How big are the groups?
Up to 7 people. Shared hikes mix solo travellers and couples into one small group; a private hike is just your own group.
Do you guide during Ramadan?
Yes, Khalid guides during Ramadan. You're free to eat and drink; doing it discreetly in the villages is appreciated.
Is the Ourika Valley safe?
Yes. Villagers are welcoming and solo travellers walk with Khalid often. The real risk is the river: sudden summer storms can cause flash floods, so Khalid watches the forecast daily and changes the route or date if storms are coming.
Ourika, Imlil or Ouzoud: which day trip should I choose?
Ourika is the closest and gentlest. Imlil is the base for Toubkal and harder treks. Ouzoud Falls is about 2.5 hours each way and the day is about one waterfall. For villages, real hiking and a relaxed day, choose Ourika.
What languages does Khalid speak?
Tashelhit (Berber, his mother tongue), Arabic, French and English, plus a little German. And, as he likes to say, the bad words of every language his guests have taught him.
What should I wear and bring?
Closed shoes with good grip, a hat, sunscreen, 1.5–2 litres of water, a warm layer and some cash. Covering shoulders and knees is respectful in the villages.
How do I book?
Send Khalid a WhatsApp message with your dates and group size. He'll reply with a plan and a price.
